What sort of aircraft were designated for chasing? Presumably they could only see a fraction of the flight because of the difference in performance.

Thanks hour the reply. I looked up the performances of the X-1 and the F-86. Seems you could go 300 miles an hour faster and about 30000 feet higher, so it would be like me chasing a 747 in my car.

F-86 started farther out. The X-1 had less than 5 minutes of fuel. Then it was a glider.
