Wow. Was that your closest call? I thought the X-1A had an ejection seat though. That’s why they changed the cockpit. (It is so cool to be able to talk to you like this! You have been my hero for 50 years!)
AFTER my flight they added an ejection seat. But they didn't increase the size of the tail. So unfortunately Mel Apt was unlucky & did not know how to recover & augured in after being the 1st to exceed MACH 3.
