Yes and 1 week after they sunk the HMS Rhona in the Mediterranean which to this day is the largest loss of US troops at sea, my grandpa was one of the survivors, ended up with the Flying Tigers after that.

Why was mustard gas aboard an allied ship?
-
The allies kept mustard gas in stock to use for retaliation in case the germans did. The germans stockpiled nerve agents to use on the battlefield but never did.

A few years ago we helped a merchant marine survivor, who was exposed to mustard agent. The cargo was classified and the British did not want the Germans to know the damage done. Gen Ike had a Sr Medical Officer in area and he recognized symptoms and helped drs treat them

Thank you for remembering. My parents were in Bari as small children at that time. I always believe my families health issues stem from that mustard gas.
