I think one could have known. But it was easier to look away. And the later would put youself in one of the camps. At least i like to believe we have learned not to believe a hitler would not turn out as bad as hitler.
General Rall thought the "liberation of extermination camps" reported in the Stars & Stripes was merely Allies propaganda. He didn't believe it. Of course he later learned it was true.
