Not the full answer. The Luftwaffe saw enemy aircraft on every mission. I saw enemy aircraft on about 5-6 out of 60 missions. Gunther Rall was shot down several times in one day!https://twitter.com/ArlingtonSteve/status/936404677356408832 …

The only reason they had so many kills was they didn't have replacements. Hartmann had 352 or so, but he had to fight until he was either killed or made a soviet POW.

Yup. Whole lot easier when the enemy are coming to you, often several times a day!

If I may add...the men of Jagdverband 44 were by far the most incredible group of dogfighting pilots ever.

      1. MAD ABOUT FOOTBALL‏ @Acebuckeye13 30 Nov 2017

Combination of factors. Most Luftwaffe aces were flying on the Eastern Front, against (initially) poorly/quickly trained Soviet pilots. By the time Chuck was flying combat missions in the West, the Luftwaffe had been depleted and didn't have the planes or pilots to send up.

As mentioned, the P47 pilot was Robert S Johnson of Lawton, OK. His a/c was already shot to pieces when the 190 stumbled on him. Johnson came to the conclusion that the 190 must have been out of 20mm cannon shells. Read his book, Thunderbolt!pic.twitter.com/dvC3BFL1Yp

Sir, I have your autograph from a 1970s London air show party. My aunt, wife of Col. E.Archie NeSmith, Dr. Mary NeSmith, was sitting at your table. There are autographs of other aces too, including Gunther Rall. When I saw your tweet I had to say hello.
