The Wright Field scientists knew. The x-1 was the first MANNED vehicle to officially exceed Mach 1, but not first flying object.

Also rockets like the V-2, as mentioned. The boom was a known phenomenon. It was the controllability through the transonic regime that was the real issue for manned AC. And a power plant for sustained supersonic flight.
