The WASPS don't get enough credit - they flew everything from the hottest fighters to the biggest bombers, through appalling weather conditions . They may not have been shot at, but they definitely flew some dangerous missions !

Widewake Field is on Ascension Island, a British Island in the South Atlantic. A refueling stop for WW II aircraft from US to Brazil (a WW II ally) to African colonies to UK. Named Wideawake because if you missed it there was no other place to land.
