I've always heard it was the Focke-Wulf FW 190, evident by the nickname it was given - "The Butcher Bird", but it would be very interesting to hear what a contemporary has to say on the matter.

My dad came home from WWII ETO on a Liberty Ship in December 1945. Said it took 19 days in rough weather, & there were a bunch of Texans aboard playing "Yellow Rose of Texas" repeatedly. He & a pal threw it overboard one night.
