Two uncles suffered tremendous mental issues from their experiences of fighting in the Pacific campaign. One died young. The other needed treatment for decades. It was horrific as are all wars. They did what they had to but never recovered.

My great uncle fought at Tarawa & Iwo Jima and drank quite heavily for a very long time and blamed the Japanese for robbing him of his youth till the day he died!

Who knows how much longer the war would have dragged on, and how many more people would have died, and with what end result (ie the Japanese Communist Party, backed by Stalin, ruling half of Japan) had it not been for the A-bomb?

Stalin was the guy who declared war on Japan 2 days after Hiroshima then shouted “I beat them!!” Yes, they would have eventually had to do so and would certainly have replicated the Korean and Vietnamese splits. Probably taking Hokkaido.
