AGREED! I keep hearing all kinds of horsepower numbers on the merlin Packard, but I still don’t know what it actually was?

The Packard engine lacked power the merlin ha e the P51 that power .. the P51D was an amazing aircraft.. the FW190D was just comparable. The TA152 was arguably better but did not have numbers to complete

The Allison was a good and strong engine, but the improved Packard built Merlins were better at all altitudes. My Grandfather worked for Packard and was drafted back in the Navy to work on PT’s in New Guinea.

Or a Scottish re-engineered Merlin. Just had to throw that in as a distant cousin of General Jimmy Stewart & a descendant of King James. Lol

I like the sound of the Rolls Royce Jacobite Engine, flown by James Stewart.

I think some people forget that, US industry was much more advanced on precision engineering and mass production than UK. Read that US engineers were shocked at standard of the plans supplied by RR and revised them.

Germans were even more advanced , RR would have a hard time making a DB 601 today, at scale
