No offense, but I really have no idea at all what that means

Why would I be offended that you don't get it? I'm sure there are others who will explain it. Anyone?

And the world would have been robbed of one of the best sounding combustion engines ever.....nothing like the sound of a Merlin.

Chuck, I think you know the answer. Spit had better climb rate, more speed, better visibility...Mustang was the better escort A/C.

Just found out a Griffin with a contre-rotating prop was fitted to a P51 air racer in the ‘70s . The kite was called the ‘Red Baron’ and it held the unlimited piston aircraft speed record of just shy of 500 mph for 10 years.

The P51 got the job done, with the engine it had, and in the quantities it was built, with the pilots we trained to fly it. In the 80's, a P51 airframe was fitted with a turboprop, and proposed as a ground attack aircraft: the PA48 Enforcer. Wasn't accepted, but neat to see.
