1945. Still flying the airplanes they bombed Poland with in 1939. The US spirit of innovation brought us the P-51 in mass quantities by 44. The Germans designed and built a few exquisite models, including jets, but couldn't meld imagination w/ mass which we did. We need that now.https://twitter.com/rgpoulussen/status/1241442170026016768 …

6 months. Drafting table to the air. And America also put up the P-38, P-47, F-4U, Hellcat, Bearcat. And those were just the dogfighters. And I’m sure I missed some. Innovation. Mass.

Jealousy will get you nowhere. You must be British. The P-51 turned the tables on the Nazis

I see his point, Chuck. the Mustang was much better with Rolls-Royce’s Merlin 61. The two-stage, two-speed supercharged versions of the engine gave it great high altitude performance and range, range, range, as they say.

The Mustang's range came from it's superb aerodynamics and large fuel storage. Example: the radiator was so efficiently designed and located, that it actually had a negative net drag. Any number of engines could have propelled it.

They're big on that, aren't they? Still trying to claim the Miles M52 'could have been' the first supersonic aircraft. No one actually got in the damn thing and flew it.

Worked great with a Rolls Royce Merlin in it! And it's subjective I know, but the early Spitfire is far better looking! But we worked together and got the job done, that's all that really matters.

Yes it most certainly did. A fantastic plane built for the British and as you are aware until it got the British Merlin engine it was uncompetitive. Fair play to the Yanks for the brilliant design & fair play to them for recognising the engine was not up to the job
