Q fr @Bhess Germans called the F-104 a widowmaker. Did they need more training or was the 104 not good enough to be a fighter? A: They were flying it outside the envelope @HISTORY @EdwardsAFB @AFFTMuseum @AirForceTimes

@GenChuckYeager look what just showed up in my feed. Amazing video. What was it like to be in that spin? What a pilot you are, Sir. So much respect. https://twitter.com/theaviationist/status/1204702226020737024?s=21 …https://twitter.com/TheAviationist/status/1204702226020737024 …

It was said that to obtain an F-104, simply buy a plot of land in Germany.

The lack of training was certainly part of the story.

Maybe because they got sold it on roles outside the envelope. Hard on the pilots though

Oh. In other words, those Germans thought they can fly that plane even faster, higher, tighter, longer, heavier, etc-er than what American test pilots had set as the limits of the envelope. High price to pay for their unbelief. 😔😢

Mr. Yeager: In Spain, F104g was in service during ten years. In all that time, there was not any incident. I think, good pilots , good weather and used the plane as a pure fighter, maked it possible. Send you, regards from Valencia, Spain.

The RCAF had an “out of envelope” job to do as well and suffered high attrition in training. The envelope was’t flying at FL30 in CAVU but low level in the CLAG to deliver a bucket of sunshine and the CF-104 would of been very tough to stop. RIP to those warriors.
