  My father was 7 in Inglewood, CA . He witnessed the battle of Los Angeles just a couple months after Pearl. He told a story about the shrapnel raining down over his neighborhood.

  Two weeks tanker SS Montebello was sunk off the coast of Cambria, CA by Japanese submarine I-21. My grandfather managed the Cambria Pines Lodge.   For the sake of the hypothetical, and to stress the strategic value of PH, what would have happened if the Japanese had followed the aerial attack with an amphibious landing of 5,000 troops? And what if they’d taken PH as theirs? What next? Where do the carriers go? What fleet?
