Was there any true understanding by you and the engineers at this point, of the actual aerodynamic forces that was causing the turbulence as you approached Mach? Or did they only become clear after you pierced through?

It is only turbulent while you are approaching MACH 1, once you pass through the threshold, it becomes much smoother.

Your flight report indicated that buffeting in fact dropped off after Mach 0.9 & only difficulty was inability to stall due to lack of elevator effectiveness. Your report on 8th flight (Oct 10) suggests that was the squirrelly one.
