In 66. I’ve worked as an engineer in aerospace most of my career. Would they really have risked your life if they didn’t think it could be done? As you said, the question was whether the X1 could do it.
Yes, they would have - do you know how many streets are named after dead pilots trying to get data? I would not have flown if we had not overcome the problems I encountered in the 7th powered flight

Test flying is VERY risky. (That is just one of the reasons that you are a hero in my book.) That doesn’t mean it is a suicide mission though. As you said, you could’ve refused if you didn’t think you had a chance to succeed. That’s all I meant by it was thought to be possible.
