I am glad I got to fly through “the barrier.” I did it in 1997, and I really never understood the true physical significance until that flight.
Q fr @art_burke Did people seriously believe supersonic was impossible, like they believed that the 4-minute mile was impossible,for reasons pre-ordained by nature? A: Yes & on my 7th powered flight, I thought it might be impossible in the X-1 @USAirForce @USAF_ACC @DeptofDefense

I doubt that the engineers thought it was impossible. The V2 flew at Mach 3 and it was stable. They probably had questions about how controllable supersonic flight was. I don’t know what the pilots thought about it though.
