Betty Lou Oliver was injured when the cables supporting her elevator sheared and fell 75 stories, ending up in the basement. Oliver survived the fall, and rescuers found her amongst the rubble. This still stands as the Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall.

I remember this story. The Empire State Building, built in only 15 months, has a super strong structure and frame. What a sad and tragic day.

I thought something like that happened on 9/11 when a fellow teacher told me a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. Boy was I wrong.

That was my first thought as well. When the second plane hit I knew we were at war. I hit the VCR and started recording. I haven’t watched the tape to this day. It’s too sickening. For an all too brief time after that we were not Republicans and Democrats we were all Americans.

Somewhere between 30,000 to 40,000 men were killed in training for the air war in WWII showing what a hazardous service it was and the way men were being rushed to the war
