My guess—Yeager superbly understood the dynamics of flying and intuitively felt forces and responses of the aircraft along with understanding all avionics indicators & electrical-mechanical systems. Today Yeagers mind-body-avionics & control systems pilot integration is missing.

I initially was disgusted by that segment about astronaut-candidate Ed Dwight too, however, upon further research, I realized that Dwight wasn't up to speed, relative to the guys that were selected as astronauts.
