Can an experienced pilot hop in any plane he is rated for regardless of manufacturer and be able to fly it without instruction on where the controls or gauges are?

I always heard that Japanese aircraft were more maneuverable than ours during the WW2 period. Not sure how true that was but i have a feeling you would know.

My dad said the zeros were much more maneuverable than the heavier corsairs and P-47. But thier pilots paid for it with minimal armor.
