I have no doubt that there is important work for the military to be done in space. The question however is if we need an entire new branch of the military, and all the bureaucracy and waste that could come with it, in order to accomplish that.

I think not. Why couldn't renewed emphasis on space be accomplished through the existing AFSPC that could be revamped or expanded.

The same could be argued before they split the airforce from the Army Aircorp. Seem to work out ok. Sea air and land, and now space. Each has it's own unique focus.
