Q fr @aisb23 Did you ever fly a Spitfire? I know your opinion of the RAF is not high but what about their planes? A: Spitfire not great. P-51 was able to take the war to Germany

Replying to @GenChuckYeager @aisb23
A Living Legend gives his First Hand Opinion to a group of armchair historians that were born after WW2 and they want to debate it? I'll take the word of the guy that was there. Same guy later breaking the sound barrier GEN. CHUCK YEAGER For the Win!

I would point out that plenty of RAF Eagle squadron pilots with more kills than General Yeager like Donald Blakeslee and Don Gentile had a much better opinion of the Spitfire.

These two preferred the P-51, in fact clamored to fly it. Further, Gentile flew combat 2 years when there were more Germans in the sky. I flew combat for 8 months - we saw Germans on about 5 of 60 missions

No, he doesn’t because as I pointed out, Blakeslee and Gentile flew P47 Thunderbolts after transferring from the RAF, and they did not like ‘em. That’s why they wanted to fly P51s. I don’t know why the General wants to bad mouth Spitfires, to the average Brit, it looks weird.
