Designed in the US following a request from the UK, unfortunately we didn’t have the benefit of the P-51 in 1940. And without the Allison version of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, it may well not have achieved the eventual success it did.

P51D: merlin engine, great plane. Earlier versions no way near as good. Drop tanks gave range thus ability to support bombers superior to the Spitfire. Unfair to compare. But the Spitfire NOT GREAT! Rubbish.
