Brave man 
Oct 8, 1947: My 7th powered flight in X-1. I did a turn to see mimic what would occur at higher speed straight & level. I lost control of the horizontal stabilizer. Uh oh. We'll never be able to get thru Mach 1. I landed, told Ridley: We're done. @usairforce @blakeshelton
