I just don't get why folk would go thru all the hassle of becoming a member of a political party if they didn't actually support it

I know u keep saying there are folk out there who do join w/o supporting but u fail to give me reasons as to why they would do that?
I did. They want to vote in the leadership contest because they like one of the candidates

if by stalwart you mean rebelled against the party hundreds of times, then yes.

I just meant a renowned Labour guy with Labour values. But if ur saying thats not what Labour is then who am I to argue? :)
