    The Free Speech Bill will protect the rights of students, academics & speakers. Fulfilling our manifesto commitment and bolstering existing legal duties. We want universities to be places where open, intellectual debate is not limited by the chilling effect of 'cancel culture'.

    Pupils will no longer be advised to wear face coverings in schools and colleges from 17 May, as infection rates decrease and the vaccination roll-out covers most adults. All other protective measures such as 'bubbles', extra hygiene & social distancing will remain in place.

    I want to make sure we support our children and young people as we build back better from the pandemic. That's why we're putting more funding into programmes which promote positive wellbeing in schools.

    Mental health leads can play such an important role in creating the whole school approach at school. Many of us have been calling for more funding to increase their numbers. Pleased to see the government has put forward the funding for 7,800 new MH leads to be trained!

    Hugely encouraging to see positive cases of COVID-19 continuing to remain low among secondary school pupils and staff. Thank you to staff and pupils for your efforts. Please continue to test regularly and follow protective measures to keep classrooms as safe as possible.

    Dr Shamez Ladhani, Consultant Paediatrician at PHE and the study’s chief investigator, said: “Results of this study shows current COVID-19 infection among secondary school staff and pupils has fallen significantly from the already low levels recorded last November. “These findings are reassuring and contribute to wider evidence that shows the risk of transmission in schools is low. “This also indicates the importance of public health measures in schools for reducing transmission.”
    The latest round of our Schools Infection Survey (SIS) suggests a reduction in the percentage of secondary school pupils and staff testing positive for since schools reopened. Read more:
