Well done @Garyw_ for challenging this. The entire premise of the piece appears to revolve around a hypothetical Let's Encrypt breach of private keys and folk forgetting to renew their certs. Still garnered 1.2k "claps" sadly.https://twitter.com/Garyw_/status/1144930966655373312 …

A few weeks ago, @CommunityCon posted a blog on medium about how Let's Encrypt were bad for the industry. I asked him to cite three actual reasons. He cited none and ignored my repeated requests to do so. https://medium.com/@john.h.horst/interesting-points-but-the-whole-symantec-thing-is-exactly-why-i-approach-this-like-i-do-maybe-a-1ebcb68c1b55 …

I would probably tend to agree with him. its like a consolidation of power. there is no counter balance for letsencrypt if one day it goes bad risk is substantial. for threat model assuming letsencrypt owned by facebook. would we prefer putting eggs in one basket.

Ok, what is the risk of let’s encrypt hosting the majority of certs? What do you mean by them going bad?

its an organization an organization needs funds, acquisitions can happen. besides all eggs in one basket gives all the power to that one basket. ISRG the driving force behind letsencrypt is a us entity giving US gov power to cease and desist. cont.

That’s still not a valid threat model.

And why do you think that's not a possibility on the cards. threat modeling as per my humble understanding is all about what if scenario's. and IT in general has kind of proven almost anything is possible just takes some delays.

You might as well say the same about Microsoft or the linux foundation or the Apache foundation.

yup and that's why i don't trust one operating system with everything i have. that is why linux has many distro's some not even endorsed by linux foundation.

And any of them could be compromised. The NSA have been caught hoarding zero days. You can continuously jump st shadows or you can just deal with what you know
