Not sure why a predatory journal would want to waive the open-access charge. In fact, they were so nice about it I felt somewhat guilty. But given the blatant lies regarding their stated peer review policy I got over that feeling rather quickly... http://crimsonpublishers.com/peer-review-process.php …

This might all just seem like a bit of a lark. But some established academics from credible institutions (e.g. Princeton & Rutgers) are publishing their work in journals like these . So there's a serious issue here too.

Just to add a point that is being missed by some. Academic publishing per se is not broken. The mainstream journals in which the vast majority of academics publish their work are totally fine. Predatory journals are a whole different class of journal: e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predatory_open-access_publishing …

Totally fine is over-stating a little - mainstream journals have their problems too of course (e.g. reliance on sexy/novel findings, impact factors). But these issues are many orders of magnitude below than those associated with predatory journals.

was this pre or post-tenure?
-
We don't really have tenure in the UK. But my position is permanent (and I've never heard of anyone being fired for writing a paper on ass wiping...).
#academicfreedom -
did you actually perform the study, as in, did you ask 8 UK politicians about this?
-
No. This was a hoax. No data was collected. No theories made any sense. And the implications are entirely BS.
-
just realized that you also made up your affiliation. was wondering about associating yourself with fake research. otherwise find the whole thing really funny.
-
Yup - it's all fake. Name made up too - although a little closer to reality there.

But Fecal Science .... amazing

That’s scatology, apparently. Eyes opened to new horizons. Delighted to have been caused to look it up ...

A munchkin from the Sound of Music! That’s no way to refer to Gretl!

I got the wrong film (let's just say I didn't spend too much time writing it) - meant Wizard of Oz! And I didn't have the heart to ask them to correct the proofs...
-
Haha! I thought it was intentional to separate out the true musical theatre fans! It’s a funny piece with an important message - well done.

Thanks, Kay!

After laughing out loud and tweeting this hoax paper, I'm now ashamed about openly mocking people I know nothing about. 1) What must their situation be like to be engaging in these publication practices?
-
2) are mainstream journals any better? Most do peer review when results are known, using their status and power to cherry pick most interesting findings. Isn't that predatory?
-
Simple answer: Yes. But that's not to say there isn't also vast room for improvement there too.
-
I wouldn't call the mainstream journals predatory as such. But the incentive structures generated by universities and manifested in mainstream journal practices are dysfunctional if robust knowledge is really the goal in mind.
-
Are you sure the mainstream publishers are so innocent? They take our research, get us to edit and review, then charge us to read it
-
More symptoms than anything else. But definitely problematic.
