progress towards AGI would be reflected in making progress on open-ended domains, eg transferring between video games with different skins but common logic. alas the fact that people are working hard doesn’t mean they progress is being made (cf alchemy).https://twitter.com/zergylord/status/997915182075662336 …

> transferring between video games with different skins but common logic We can't do this now? That's surprising to me! (as a non-practicing observer of AI/ML research)

We indeed can't do this automatically. To clarify, one system could learn either, but having learned one doesn't help it at the other. What led you to think we could?

Have I misinterpreted this result? https://www.technologyreview.com/the-download/610244/deepminds-latest-ai-transfers-its-learning-to-new-tasks/ … I would have thought that transfer would be even better from the same game with a different skin.

In general I just would have thought that if you switched skins, then if you started with a neural net trained from pixels, all that would need to change would be the first few layers.

perhaps a poor choice of words. didn’t mean skins that are pixel for pixel identical; i meant more like the difference between different shooter games set in different environment eg space aliens vs zombies
