I shouldn't have used such vulgar language... it was literally my first reaction. I think Gary is spot on calling "bullshit" on my outlandish claims coming out of AI. However, the idea that machine learning itself is limited in some way, I find indefensible.

I feel the same about magic. No limits.

Magic doesn’t exist, though. ;) the main difficulty here is that there is no clean box around “machine learning” telling us what it is. No existing tech is especially creative. But I’m certain some future ML tech will get there with data + it’s own experience.

      Nor does bias-free universal learning.

Gary, you do say "never". I don't think you can support that claim rigorously.

agree: “extremely unlikely to ever” would have been better (but our original piece got cut by 50% to fit the space). the extreme unlikeliness is because of the combinatorics of a very complex generative system

True. But actually I’m not really a believer in an induction foundation for statistics.

Sorry to interject, but I feel like you're talking past each-other. No Free Lunch does of course apply to ML, as does information theory. But they constrain how much you can get from how little, not how much you can do given arbitrarily much data or compute.

The community performs a local search in the space of learning algorithms: Sometimes more, sometimes less general algorithms are considered. Both steps look useful; what you are asking for is continuously happening. Methods could be improved though.
