endless headlines this calendar year alone have said that machines can read better than people; last week we heard the Google Talk to Books was “astounding.” lots of people way overestimated chatbots. Afraid ‘sensible’ is too small a subset of the people taking about language...https://twitter.com/egrefen/status/988467426248527872 …

To be fair, I don't think anyone sensible was claiming we're anywhere near solving NLU with DL (or any other method). It's just an effective tool for very simple/constrained NLU problems.

This is a strawman as it seems like you're suggesting that hyped press coverage of AI comes from research community, which I don't think is accurate. Eg the big language stuff recently was SQuAD and that was just crazy PR from Alibaba and MSFT. Not researchers overclaiming

Researchers overclaim ALL THE TIME. You get more press coverage for big companies for obvious reasons, but the overall atmosphere is problematic. Here's one example from a paper I happened to read yesterday. https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.06585 pic.twitter.com/kRIBz21ObY

You see handwavy garbage in press releases all the time (this one from DeepMind). This in turn leads to pop-tech articles with even more over-the-top sensationalism. I think most researchers are honest, but they typically aren't the ones shaping public perception.pic.twitter.com/EaZqtBVaD1

@deepmind Who is writing these ridiculous press releases? Your paper doesn't cite any literature in child development to justify this language

I can't deny that the press gets a little carried away, and that some researchers play to this, but I think many of the key drivers of DL for NLU have been pretty frank about expressing reasonable-yet-guarded enthusiasm for the progress that has been made in the last 4-5 years.

Would be nice if papers spent more time dissecting where a method doesn't work & its current flaws. Context. I feel like this is something that's becoming less common because it's surprising to find exceptions to this. This used to scribbled into the "Future" Work section
