Why is this ability necessarily innate? Seems to me that these birds would be able to learn representations for small numbers during their lifetime if they had an innate ability to learn sequences, and an innate ability to generalize.

Would definitely recommend Zorzi's work; many generative models end up with number sensitivity through trying to explain the statistics of images. Could still be innate in animals, but isn't obvious.https://www.nature.com/articles/nn.2996 …
