While I admire the work of @GaryMarcus in fleshing out the inadequacies of #DeepLearning, I completely disagree with him that DL just needs to be augmented in some manner. DL must be completely thrown out like yesterday's garbage if AGI research is to make any progress.https://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/959459804199735296 …

“We are born knowing there are causal relationships in the world, that wholes can be made of parts, and that the world consists of places and objects that persist in space and time,” Marcus says. “No machine ever learned any of that stuff using backprop.” https://www.wired.com/story/greedy-brittle-opaque-and-shallow-the-downsides-to-deep-learning …

Where does Marcus say "DL just needs to be augmented in some manner "?

I have and I think you are mis-characterizing his position. He says DL is the wrong approach to AGI. We three agree on that.

Strange. I distinctly remember him writing on separate occasions that DL is not enough and must be supplemented with innate structures. I even responded on those occasions that he did no go far enough. But then again, maybe I'm remembering wrong and he has changed his position.

deep learning alone is certainly not enough for AGI; it or something like it might play some role, as one tool among many.

I think the main problem of deep learning is not what it is, but the problems that it tries to solve. Assigning human level understanding to a picture based on labeled dataset of millions of photos without embodied experience is just too much of shortcut.

The main reason I maintain that DL must be discarded is that DL learns complex patterns but the brain does not. The brain can instantly see a new complex pattern without learning it. There aren't enough neurons and synapses in the brain to store all possible patterns like DL.
