There is still an incredible amount of naive hype, but clearly it is loosing momentum. Question is: will it be a typical AI winter, or just more rational and productive trough of disillusionment followed by slope of enlightenment.

Without a doubt. It is one of those things that #DeepLearning cannot help us with. So it's refreshing to see someone of Gary Marcus' stature beginning to rattle the cages of the DL community.

BTW, every bubble eventually becomes a "philosophy" since there is no more "rational" narrative left to keep it going. People end up believing in something, just because it feels wrong to question it. Typical late stage hype curve.

Unlike DNNs, the brain does not learn complex patterns. It learns many elementary patterns that it can pool together to instantly build any complex object, even ones it has never seen before. Indeed, almost everything we see is new. Objects are rarely seen from the same angle.
