not at all; you actually abstract symbols in each case; you are just mapping to symbols you are already know, using something like a nearest-neighbor algorithm and your linguistic and world knowledge to constrain the process

It seems like you are trying to deconstruct a set of algorithms from what a neural network does by its intrinsic nature. Just because your set of algorithms might explain the process, it doesn't imply that is the same as the actual process.
