This seems like an unfair criticism on Gary’s part but I’m not a neuroscientist. I don’t think you have to know everything about the brain to be able to say that neural networks are a “cartoon”/highly simplified mirror of their biological counterparts. Right?https://twitter.com/garymarcus/status/1200088188934451200 …

Thanks Gary! I do appreciate you trying to cut through the hype in the field of machine learning- it’s definitely needed.

What is the information content of a stream of neural spikes?

Bialek has a great book speculating on that, but the answer remains unknown

I think some people conflate their goal of "find a mechanism that can produce similar or better outcomes of that of the brain" to "find the mechanism by which the brain produces those outcomes." This distinction is more obvious in robotics and less so in AI for some people.

In the last year I've met so many high profile "AI" companies CTOs that don't even know what's a "spike", let alone a dendrite... It's just marketing and hype just cos people can spam social network with gifs and movies of actually just "curve fitting".

Haha even more fundamentally, how big a lump of protons and electrons do you need for "thinking?" Whats the number? 1? 17? 10^9? How does empty space contemplate itself? You're right, we have not a single clue how actual intelligence works.

If we cannot answer the most basic questions of how thought is realized in the brain then it would seem to follow that
@elonmusk's neural lace project@neuralink is doomed because it depends in crucial part on our ability to read and write brain activity.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
