It may be fruitful & fashionable to say we dont understand anything about the brain & so cant model it. But that's simply not how modeling works. Its iterative and you go with your best guess until contradictory evidence provides you with a better one.

But the problem Grace is that the advocates of ANNs do not take your position: They do not want to iterate to a better (biologically) model, but instead double down on this particular abstraction at this particular point in time.

With all due respect, I don't know who these practitioners you speak of are. Grace's position is the mainstream, in my opinion.

100% this! I know of nobody in the community who would say "today's ANNs are perfect models of the brain, let's not dig deeper".

In my experience, they are more likely to dismiss ANNs as having anything to do with the brain, both because they understand how simple ANNs are, and because they imagine the brain is some mysterious goo that simple models couldn't possibly capture.

I think simple models have still missed something fundamental; I have been making that point literally for 20 years; they still haven't captured what I have been pointing to.

start with #9 here: https://link.medium.com/FBcn5YwYZ1  but it really does to take a full chapter of The Algebraic Mind to get across a pretty nuanced argument.

          1) U prob won't be, but if you're interested in re-starting debate about what general intelligence is, but I tend to really dislike definitions like this "“General intelligence” is a system that can behave intelligently across a wide range of goals and environments."

          2) imho, a suitable definition of general intelligence must include some notion of causal inference, and optimal experiment design incl hypothesis generation
