Great! New thread then: What are the ways in which people in the neural net community think that today's ANN's are NOT perfect models of the brain? Where do you want to dig deeper, and why?https://twitter.com/timkietzmann/status/1200159447651438592 …

100% this! I know of nobody in the community who would say "today's ANNs are perfect models of the brain, let's not dig deeper".

Not a neuroscientist, but my own opinion is that weighted gating, compositionality, and learning are the foundations of bio neural nets, and all other phenomena that we care about are built on these blocks. Traditional computers only do the first, but DL can do all three.

say what? deep learning is very weak at compositionality; classical AI did they well.

I'm gonna hijack this to give an example of a good ANN model of a brain learning.https://www.nature.com/articles/nature15741 …

Where do I begin?! Anatomically speaking: (1) Biological neural circuits (BNC) consist of a plethora of cells types, including pyramidal & purkinje cells, each comprising of a unique anatomical structure that enhances the electro-chemical process at both the input and outputs

Neural networks are not perfect, good or even adequate models of the brain. However, under some circumstances, neurons and ANNs are able to approximate similar classes of functions, we can also recreate neurons. The big unknown are the functional principles of brain organization.
