But to be fair to Eliza, it runs in real-time on a 50 year-old computer. If GPT-2 weren't any better than that, then a bunch of investors should sue

It is better, but I am not sure it is the fundamental advance that some people seem to think it is. The deep question- of how to get the machine to understand and reason about the content of the human contribution to the conversation-remains very much unsolved.

I think the biggest impact of GPT-2 is demonstrating how scripted most (web) conversations and articles are. But didn't Roger Schank say almost the same thing 30ish years ago with case-based reasoning?
