It's an interesting speculation though. Let's say we had a system as capable of predicting text as humans. Would that not require underlying representations that captured the semantics? It's at least a reasonable enough speculation that it shouldn't be dismissed outright, IMO.

I think the point of this quote is that there was a claim that GPT already succeeded at prediction to a near human level.
