no expert on TREC, which seems to have fractionated into many tracks, but none seem as focused as what i am trying to do, but there is commonality in goals

Probably the TREC QA & SQuAD datasets could be useful to augment the number of q’s. Also the CommonSenseQA dataset. What about having questions that test causal chain type of answers?
