fact: progress on benchmarks has NOT thus far translated into progress on dialog & story understanding. NO current AI can read a story/article or follow a dialog & build a mental model of what has taken place questions we should be asking: - why not? - what else should we do?

@an_open_mind this is quite relevant to thread you commented on, viz progress on extant benchmarks hasn't led to measurable progress on discourse understanding. doesn't mean benchmarks have no value, and I am working on new one but this is why i don't think they are whole answer.

@filippie509 this was a great image by @PeteSouza to use as an example. I was so inspired by this and @GaryMarcus question that I made a quick video showing a little semantics going a long way with @dbpedia and @wikidata and I also quote, @JimHendlerhttps://youtu.be/l_IxzpDDVDY

The AI field is around 50 years old. AI started as "AGI". Try to actually do AGI, you will rapidly discover that GI is very complicated. You will have to get into details of just how thinking might work, how seeing works, how language works. In fact, you will be doing AI.

Why not: because that's incredibly hard. Similarly, no robots currently play in the NBA, but that doesn't mean that field isn't progressing.

Are there any experiments on #AI making a summary of the story it just red ? Instead of answering many different questions, it is maybe more difficult to answer a single question like : "what are meaningful facts of this text ?"

Actually #AI hacks human intelligence : it can translate without understanding the text. Looks like someone hacking with DNA (playing with CRISP) stating that he has produced artificial life. To claim to have produced artificial life you need to start from a stone.

Animals have bodies, still they cannot comprehend texts. Perception and acting through animal-like body is just an option. Other ones are possible and likely more feasible.
