Possibly, but afaik most current AI rad companies are positioning products to augment human radiologists (not replace them). So layoffs in those companies, IF they’re happening, and not related to other economic factors, wouldn’t be an indictment of the replacement model.
anyone else hearing this? it may fit with my recent essay w @MaxALittle that argued that, for now, AI-driven radiology is best seen as an adjunct to humans, rather than a replacement.

i don’t think it is *possible* to build a full replacement for a human radiologists at this point; no sane business would aim to do so in the near term. but see eg this from last year https://www.jacr.org/article/S1546-1440(18)30389-2/fulltext … and Hinton’s famous coyote quote

For most current radiology CVML, dataset shift is an unresolved problem, use cases are narrow and (ethical) business cases are unproven.

Agreed. Also: lack of interpretability. The ethical issues are being mishandled; use of AI, even if it actually worked, requires informed consent yet I do not hear any mention of this.

It wouldn't be that surprising if true. How many of these companies have anything close to unique technology? How many have unique (and large) datasets? How many are solving *real* business problems (as opposed to developing narrow AIs that work badly)? My guess: not many.
