"It is important, both for intellectual honesty and for continued funding, that AI researchers claim credit for our successes and take ownership of our shortcomings." Completely agree w above (but also never said deep learning should be abandoned)https://medium.com/@tdietterich/what-does-it-mean-for-a-machine-to-understand-555485f3ad40 …

But did you not say that neural networks should be abandoned in your book 'The Algebraic Mind'? Are you thus changing your mind based on recent impressive developments?

Absolutely not. Trying reading the book, or at least the subtitle? I have been calling for hybrids since my first publication, in 1992, on children's overregularization; never once said that there is no place for neural networks.

Taken from your book 'Algebraic Mind'. In short, you were dissing backpropagation years before it was even fashionable.pic.twitter.com/RKJci9vJw2

In 2001, you wrote this in your book (Algebraic Mind). Let the record show that this 'small corner' is a humongous space known as Deep Learning. It's clear as day.

i would call your attention to the conclusions page 171, particularly last few sentences in the screenshot, “symbols-manipulation [does not likely] exhaust the components for cognition.... multilayer perceptrons may play a role ... provide excellent models [of some phenomena”pic.twitter.com/FnKRO5F2Ox
