Another "understanding is binary" fallacy. Deep Learning systems can understand novel sentences well enough to translate them into multiple foreign languages. But it turns out this understanding is very shallow. Much more work to do!

i am fine with deep learning has achieved a “very superficial but nonzero level of understanding” but then the Marcus 2015 quote stands, since that is certainly not at all what i was talking about.

Agreed. Also, claiming a computer can "understand a sentence" is like saying it can "taste a flavor." Figurative language at best. At most we might observe functional equivalence of human understanding. But there remains ambiguity over what "understanding" means in this context.

Schrödingers paradox in this context smells usually of a mix of delusion and a lot of self confidence. Interestingly very similar to politics (brexiteers or maga types).

How far off a reasoned response from a machine are we? With Amazon, my queries are clearly being matched with tracts from Wikipedia - a sort of ‘Chinese room’. It’s impressive but not cognitive AI as I understand it. Any chance soon of a form of MYCIN but with true reasoning?
