As a teenager I caught on that disagreeing with smart people made me look smarter myself - if I wasn’t able to contribute, the quick and safe way to stay involved and share the attention was to poke holes. Luckily I grew out of it

many of deep learning's defenders feel that way, but a lot of people did feel misled, which is why the tweet spread so much. personally, i was just standing up for what i believe and have written about for decades, in the face of distortion.
