Comprehension is a process that at least begins with a perception that can be broken down into units that already exist in memory. Current observation has x in common with memory y and z. That's the root of all comprehension.

I think we dont need to solve the hard problem of consciousness to generate intelligence. I do think though without solving that though we need to consider the motivation piece even more carefully. Joy and pain are good motivators.

Maybe. But comprehension is not equivalent to intelligence. My question still stands: Can a person or machine comprehend something -- whatever comprehension is -- without a conscious experience of comprehension? Just putting this question out into the ether.
