Seriously? Hinton said we should stop training radiologists now because with advances in AI by the time all current radiologists retired we would not need anymore. Not that radiologists would disappear in 3 years. You might not agree with him, but he isn’t a fool.

actually this how i read that, but maybe you can show the part of the text where he invokes “the time all current radiologists retired” and how that relates to the 5-10 year figure?

The point is that you are interpreting the quote and so am I. Neither of our interpretations was spoken by him. I admit that. You should, too.

there are many articles that were published at the time that interpreted the quote as @MaxALittle and I have; can you find any that interpreted it as you did? @DrHughHarvey @DrLukeOR @AMPimaging @IvanKlyuzhin follow the radiology field more closely & might have thoughts

Further, his subsequent remark, one minute later, after “it might be 10 years” was that “anyway, we’ve got plenty of radiologists”. How does having a good supply of radiologists fit into your interpretation? If they’ll be replaced in a few years why would that matter?

I’m not concerned with whether Hinton was right about the # of radiologists in 2016, and he made no prediction about the # in 2019. But his comment only makes sense if he was making a long term prediction: we have enough rads already trained to hold us until AI takes over.

          1) We (the world) don’t have enough rads (almost every country other than US has a shortage). 2) AI (DL) is never ‘taking over’ (at least until there are breakthroughs in reasoning, logic and contextual awareness).
