I disagree. Looking at just the first few sentences of the release hides the importance of the symbolic component.

The press release starts with the word "Solving"

Sure, Gary has a dog in the fight. Doesn't necessarily make him wrong though. I suspect you also have a professional interest in AI.

I think it's hard being in Gary's position. He's pushing an unpopular opinion through a blizzard of pushback. I suspect this situation forces him to sharpen his position and exploit any avenues he can find to advance his unpopular perspective.

Just to be clear, I am subject to constant personal attacks, whispering campaigns, etc, in exchange for advocating a view that I sincerely believe to be true. There would be no place for that in a mature, healthy science.

I think this thread is a great example of that. It is so strange to attack someone for pointing out what are such obvious concerns with the press release here, and to then pile on with accusations that you're just doing this to promote book sales.

Concerns with the press release? That it uses the Rubik's cube as a hook? Why is anyone concerned about that? Is there some serious concern that the authors were claiming to have solved Rubik's cube for the first time? No, the solver was a function call. This is all so contrived.

it’s basics: you can’t say you invented a solver and then make a call to a solver. you can’t say you learned something that you wired in. and it’s not nice to misrepresent people’s positions.

You are the one misrepresenting. The report is very clearly about their work on the robotics, not the solver. Maybe the wording of the headline is unfortunate, as it opened them to this, but this is not serious.
