#DeepLearning #hype alert: ⁦@OpenAI⁩’s paper on Rubik’s cube solving starts “We’ve trained a pair of neural networks to solve the Rubik’s Cube with a human-like robot hand”; mentions critical hardwired symbol-manipulating cube solver only at ref. 111https://openai.com/blog/solving-rubiks-cube/ …

Probably also didn't dwell too much on details of the chips used or the type of flooring in their lab space. They were working on dextrous object manipulation, not solving Rubik's cube.

Yeah, @GaryMarcus seems to be making a bit of a cheap shot here. Missing the achievement in pursuit of decrying hype as part of a narrative that reaffirms his prior views.

I disagree. Looking at just the first few sentences of the release hides the importance of the symbolic component.

Sure, Gary has a dog in the fight. Doesn't necessarily make him wrong though. I suspect you also have a professional interest in AI.

I think it's hard being in Gary's position. He's pushing an unpopular opinion through a blizzard of pushback. I suspect this situation forces him to sharpen his position and exploit any avenues he can find to advance his unpopular perspective.

Just to be clear, I am subject to constant personal attacks, whispering campaigns, etc, in exchange for advocating a view that I sincerely believe to be true. There would be no place for that in a mature, healthy science.

I think this thread is a great example of that. It is so strange to attack someone for pointing out what are such obvious concerns with the press release here, and to then pile on with accusations that you're just doing this to promote book sales.

Concerns with the press release? That it uses the Rubik's cube as a hook? Why is anyone concerned about that? Is there some serious concern that the authors were claiming to have solved Rubik's cube for the first time? No, the solver was a function call. This is all so contrived.

I'm sure Marcus made a truckload of cash even though the company produced nothing. Marcus knows how to play the game in the AI business. 😁

It's been my view since 1991 at least, I mostly get attacked for thinking robots aren't people (or occasionally for thinking all people deserve representation), I just mute attackers, I have no idea if anyone whispers, I've never made much money off it, I'm seldom in the news.1/2

I'm not saying one way or the other is right, I'm just saying I find this thread of conversation slightly bizarre, maybe I'm missing something. I guess I don't go normative on people's self-promotion decisions; I just don't follow everyone with equal attention. 2/2

No personal attack from me but of you're in a defensive posture I understand why you may find it difficult to admit on this occasion you may be wrong.
